Halawa Correctional Facility is a prison in the City and County of Honolulu, Hawaii on the island of Oahu. It is operated by the Hawaii Department of Public Safety.[1] The prison is in proximity to the communities of Aiea and Halawa.[2][3]
The facility houses inmates in medium security, maximum security and special needs populations. Originally opened in 1962 as the City and County Halawa Jail it was transferred to the State in 1977. The prison was expanded in 1987 and remains the largest prison in the State of Hawaii correctional system.
